Happy Friday everyone! It’s been a busy week, and I didn’t have a single blog post ready to post this week. Do you ever find that some weeks are just like that? We may have good intentions of getting lots done, but then the reality of juggling everything we have to do gets in the way….
Yesterday was Thanksgiving, and like lots of other folks, I spent the week grocery-shopping, cooking, traveling, and celebrating (oh, and let’s not forget eating waaayyy too much).
My Mom and I divided up the cooking, which works out great – we have double the kitchen space and half the work of preparing the Thanksgiving meal – and yesterday my hubby and I packed up the coolers and headed down for our family gathering. I hate for my Mom to have to do any cooking at all; I’d rather her be able to just relax and enjoy her Thanksgiving meal. The problem is that she probably wouldn’t enjoy it if she didn’t help make it. She loves to cook, even though it’s hard on her.
Several years ago, a very dear lady gave me an invaluable piece of advice: “Let her do as much as she can for as long as she can. The day will come when she’s not able to do any of it, and it will break her heart.” This sweet lady went on to tell me how hard it was for her not to be able to do things and to have to depend on others to do them for her. She has since gone home to Heaven, but her words have remained with me.
As we did all our shopping, prepping and cooking I reflected on just how much we had to be grateful for this year. The list is way too long to mention everything, but here are just a few things I’m thankful for:
- We were able to celebrate Thanksgiving with my parents, two of my brothers, and my cousin this year.
- My Mom hit her 5 years cancer-free mark last month.
- We survived a tornado and had minimal damage to our property.
- My husband has recovered from his pericarditis and is regaining his previous strength levels.
- Our son and my in-laws survived a devastating hurricane, and not only were they okay, their homes weren’t damaged.
- Although I’m having some increased pain issues right now, I’m stronger than I was last year at this time.
- I’ve met lots of new, wonderful people through this adventure of blogging — yes, I’m talking about YOU, dear friend!
Thanksgiving is the time of year that we talk a lot about what we’re grateful for, but cultivating an ‘attitude of gratitude’ year-round can be beneficial both mentally and physically. For our next Wellness Wednesday we’ll be looking at what research says about the effect of gratitude on our health. I hope you’ll join me!

****Just so you know, I’m going to change my posting schedule, because for some reason I’m having trouble getting posts ready for Monday. Obviously the Wellness Wednesday posts will still be published on Wednesdays, but I’m going to change my other posting day to Fridays. I may still post something on Monday occasionally because I have a couple of holiday posts from last year I thought I’d share again this year, but Friday will be my new scheduled day.
